The role of Observation in the Clinical Situation

A series of experiential workshops which aim, through the emotional experience of film, literature and case discussion, to enhance and develop the psychotherapist’s existing clinical observational sensitivities and abilities.

Observation has always been central to the history and growth of psychoanalytic knowledge. Therapists’ questions arising from puzzling observations during therapeutic treatment have, over the decades, prompted the further elaboration and formulation of psychoanalytic theories and constructs. During training there are few opportunities to develop observational skills outside of the actual clinical setting. The reality, rawness and emotional intensity found in the live, complex, clinical relational situation is extremely difficult to prepare for in the clinicians’ training and ongoing professional life. These 10 experiential workshops aim, through the emotional experience of film, literature and case discussion, to enhance and develop existing clinical observational sensitivities and abilities. The workshops are based on the paradox that these life simulating presentations allow for professional meaningful experiences during a safe, ethical and respectful event.

This course is for Psychologists, Social Worker, and psychology and social work students.
